Pu’er tea or Pu-Erh tea is a fermented type of tea from China.

Pu Erh tea is the only type of tea that undergoes a second fermentation by microorganisms during storage. This makes Pu Erh tea distinctly different from all other organic teas. The leaves of Pu Erh tea are usually pressed into discs or balls and must be broken into smaller portions before preparation.

Organic Pu Erh tea as convenient mini tuo.

The leaves of organic Pu Erh tea are usually completely black, indicating full oxidation. The leaves of Pu Erh tea produce a deeply black infusion, which almost resembles coffee in color.

The aromas of Shou Pu Erh tea are undoubtedly among the most sophisticated of all teas and often evoke the flavors of fine whiskey or cognac, with pronounced notes of malt, dried fruits, and even musk.

For the organic Pu Erh compressed into Mini Tuos, the leaves were pressed into small balls weighing about 5 g each. This makes this Pu Erh tea ideal for on-the-go, at the office, or while traveling. The Pu Erh tea was compressed and has since been traditionally aged. This Pu Erh tea has a very sophisticated and complex profile. On one hand, it has the strong earthy tones typical of Pu Erh, and on the other hand, it also has delicate floral notes.

Preparation of Pu Erh tea:

Before Pu Erh tea can be prepared, the right amount of leaves must be broken off from the Pu Erh cake. Although there are special Pu Erh knives, a dull butter knife or a pair of scissors is usually sufficient. With the practical Mini Tuos, this step can be omitted. One Mini Tuo is enough for a small teapot (300–500 ml).

Unlike other types of tea, the leaves of Pu Erh tea should be briefly rinsed with water before the actual brewing, so that the leaves can open up better. Many tea drinkers therefore perform a cleansing infusion. The tea leaves should be covered with water at about 90°C for a maximum of 10 seconds and gently swirled. The infusion is then discarded. Since the flavors in Pu Erh tea are very intense, Pu Erh tea can be brewed almost an unlimited number of times. For Pu Erh tea, a high temperature of 90–100°C and a steeping time of 2–4 minutes can also be used.
