  • Yerba mate, is a traditional South American herbal tea. It's made from the dried leaves and stems of the Ilex paraguariensis plant. Known for its rich, earthy flavor and stimulating properties, yerba mate offers a natural energy boost and is often enjoyed communally.

  • A kalebasse, also known as a gourd, is the traditional cup used for drinking mate. It's typically made from a dried and hollowed-out squash, though modern versions can also be crafted from wood, ceramic, or metal. The kalebasse is central to the mate-drinking ritual, and its natural material is believed to enhance the flavor of the yerba mate.

  • A bombilla is a specialized metal straw, often made of stainless steel or silver, used for drinking mate. It features a filtered or spoon-shaped end that helps to separate the steeped yerba mate leaves from the liquid, allowing for a smooth and enjoyable drinking experience.

Enjoy Mate the Traditional 9 Step Way

Gather Your Essentials

You'll need a gourd (mate), a bombilla (filter straw), yerba mate (the dried leaves), and hot (but not boiling) water, ideally from a kettle.

Fill the Gourd

Fill your gourd about two-thirds full with yerba mate.

Create the "Mountain"

Tilt the gourd on its side and gently tap it so the yerba collects on one side, forming a "mountain" with an empty space at the bottom.

Add Cool Water (Optional but Recommended)

Pour a small amount of cool or room-temperature water into the empty space. Let it sit for a minute to moisten the yerba and prevent scalding.

Insert the Bombilla

Place the bombilla into the moistened yerba, pushing it down to the bottom of the gourd, leaning against the "mountain." Try not to move it once it's in

Pour Hot Water

Now, carefully pour hot water (ideally around 70-80°C or 160-175°F – just before boiling) into the empty space next to the bombilla. Avoid pouring directly over the "mountain."

Sip and Enjoy

Sip the Mate through the bombilla until you hear a gurgling sound, indicating the gourd is empty.

Refill and Share (Optional)

Pass the gourd back to the "cebador" (the person preparing and serving the Mate). The cebador will refill the gourd with hot water and pass it to the next person in the circle. Each person drinks the entire gourd before passing it back to the cebador for the next refill.

Repeat Until "Lavado"

Continue refilling and sharing until the Mate loses its flavor (becomes "lavado," or "washed out"). At this point, the ritual concludes.

A Brief History of Mate Tea

The story of Mate (mah-tay) is deeply rooted in the heart of South America, stretching back centuries to the indigenous Guaraní people. Long before European arrival, the Guaraní tribes revered the yerba mate plant, recognizing its unique ability to energize, refresh, and provide sustenance. They consumed its leaves as an infusion, believing it to be a gift from the gods that brought vitality and well-being.

When Spanish colonizers arrived in the 16th century, they quickly adopted this local custom, impressed by the invigorating effects of the beverage. Jesuit missionaries, in particular, played a crucial role in spreading Mate's popularity throughout the continent, cultivating plantations and establishing it as a staple drink across vast regions.

Over time, Mate became more than just a drink; it evolved into a profound social ritual. From the shared gourd passed amongst friends and family to its presence in daily routines across Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and parts of Brazil, Mate embodies hospitality, community, and tradition. It's a symbol of connection, a moment to pause, and a testament to an ancient heritage that continues to thrive today.

Today, Mate remains a beloved part of South American culture, enjoyed in bustling cities and tranquil rural landscapes alike. Each sip connects you to this rich history, inviting you to partake in a tradition that has nourished and united people for generations.
